Re: Gay Marriage Ban

Sunday, February 15, 2004

Dear Editor,

It is one of those rare occasions that I totally agree with you. You are on target with your opposition to the Gay Marriage bill. I wish someone would tell me what traditional family value we are preserving.

I go to a large Baptist Church here in Cobb County and I look around and I see most people either on their second or third marriages or in ones that don't look so happy. Don't get me wrong, there are some wonderful ones too. I'm not passing judgment on them because I believe in everyone taking their own journey in life. But many of these people are the very ones screaming that we have to preserve the sanctity of marriage. Why didn't they preserve it?

One of the guys who wrote the bill decided to fool around on his wife which resulted in their divorce after 15 years of marriage. What tradition was that? The Kennedy marriage tradition or the Clinton marriage tradition?

I look at bills such as Tort reform, tax issues, healthcare, and issues dealing with the elderly and I'm wondering why all this time and energy is being spent on an issue that really doesn't impact most of Georgia. Why shouldn't a couple who's been together for 5, 10 or more years have the same rights as straight people who get up everyday, go to work, go to the gym, go to church, shop at the grocery store and basically do everything the same? What's the difference?

When you find one word that Jesus said that was anti-gay, please forward that to me. I have not been able to find it. I also can't find a whole lot about traditional marriage in the Bible either. This seems to be a Bible issue but I would doubt very many legislators could debate the Bible's message on marriage or have read it lately.

As one of our Cobb County Legislators told me on Republican mass party day, this is nothing but a hate bill. I agree. We have enough hate in the world without perpetuating it in Georgia.
