Re: A Farewell to Arms

Saturday, June 28, 2003

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your article.

I had a few rolls of caps left around that I bought about 8-10 years ago. As an adult, I saw them in a store and said "I have to have them". The caps were a part of who I was growing up, as much as cotton candy and caramel apples. Girls played Cowboys and Indians
too!

Now as a mother raising a 6 year old son, I have to resort to the Internet to buy rolls of caps (hence how I found you article during my search). He deserves to experience a childhood full of adventure and lessons in responsibility. This past Father's day, he and I
pulled out the caps and banged 'em with rocks. Then we experimented with the magnifying glass effect on the caps. I'll leave the later experiments up to him (bugs and such), some things don't need to be taught by a parent.

I know some people would say that I was acting irresponsibly, but I believe that my son learned a lot that day. He saw the danger in a simple thing like a magnifying glass, and how caps could be safe (when used with supervision). He knows the bang is from the same powder that's in guns. It's not the item, but rather the usage of it.

btw - my next search will be for a sling shot...haven't found one of them yet, and we need to work on his hand/eye coordination.

Better stop now before I go to bad parenting jail...

Signed,
Soccer Mom in Cowboy boots
