One more thing…for those fair tax nuts out there, please help me understand how the “Family Consumption Allowance” that pays people back for taxes they pay on purchases of consumables reconciles with their anti-socialist position.
Most fair tax nuts I meet are libertarian (or are saying they are because they listen to Boortz). If this is the case, the hypocrisy of this proposal seems to be at odds with their normal stance on social agendas.
I suppose the funniest thing I have read is the desire to go back to the tax system “our founding fathers” established. Seems like it might be hard to produce adequate tax revenues by just taxing imports to this country.
Tax policy like all things government, need to have some flexibility.
The Ray McBerry for governor campaign is continuing to pick up steam. He has been on 15 radio stations and is booked on four more as of today. One of the interviews this week is for an hour. Wouldn’t think Purdue would consider us an ant on their watermelon, but they have been acting mighty strange lately at GOP events when we are there. Not Washington, Not Atlanta, but Georgia First! http://www.GeorgiaFirst.org
Perhaps the Georgia’s GOP faithful will care when they realize that most of whatever votes Ray gets will go to the Democrats in November if Ray doesn’t win the primary. If you recall 2000, the election for Bush came down to very few votes. If Taylor wins by 1 vote or a million, he still wins. The Republicans have made a lot of Georgians angry in the past four years. I have been out with them all over metro Atlanta, and there are a lot more down on Sonny than the flaggers. The truth is most of the things they have done in 4 years has been bad for average Georgians, although they have run a good con on such bills as illegal immigration, eminent domain and the tort reform bills. Turn out incumbents for a couple of election cycles and we will either have control of these people or be under Marshall Law.
Another thing, would someone on this board explain why Sonny is going/has gone to California for three (3)fundraisers in such places as Huntington Beach? (Reported by AJC last week) What interest could wealthy Californians have in controling Georgia politics? It can’t be good. What do we have in common with one the most liberal states in the US?
And, if you want your blood to really run cold, read the piece by DA King published in the AJC editorials June 30th. Remember, Bush gazes into Purdue’s eyes and sees a handmaiden for his policies.

This & that

Chairman Byrd, Chairman Cutting land deals
I’ve been in the newspaper business 27 years and can’t recall an instance where a county commission chairman and planning commission chairman were so actively involved in buying commercial real estate at the same time they were making public decisions on rezoning and other land use issues.
When I was a reporter at the Marietta newspaper years ago, there was a Cobb County commissioner who made $160,000 in one day after flipping some land near a proposed road in the Smyrna area. The deal closed about the same time he got inside information about the location of the proposed road. The commissioner was voted out of office in the next election.
The actions of public officials who wheel and deal in personal real estate≈especially commercial real estate≈ while they’re supposedly conducting the public’s business fail to pass the proverbial smell test.
Ledger-News reporter Tom Brooks has uncovered the fact that Cherokee County Commission Chairman Michael Byrd and Planning Commission Chairman Rob Cutting have recently bought a 3.6-acre commercial tract in Ball Ground. The tract fronts a proposed extension road that would bypass Ball Ground.
The Ball Ground bypass has been planned for several years and isn’t set for completion on regional transportation plans until 2030, but the combination of local funding and a developer’s contribution of construction and land donation for the first leg of the road may allow the 1.5-mile road to be ⌠fast-tracked, the Ledger-News has learned.
Records show Byrd and Cutting, along with their wives, also own a nearly 4-acre commercial tract near Ga. 20 at Union Hill Road in East Cherokee.
The stink permeating Cherokee County isn’t chicken litter spread on pastures anymore. No, this smell is far worse than chicken litter.

Update on this is that James Budd has since been terminated at the Ledger-News.
Be sure to read Gina Carr’s column in the Townelaker on this mess:
I went to a candidates forum with Ray McBerry in Cherokee County. After hearing the county commissioner discuss all the venues and buildings they were building and just “had” to have; I left happy I don’t live there. These people call themselves Conservatives? People move to a county for low taxes and then inevitably they get big ideas and start the building plans. There goes the low tax base. I live in a high tax county, but at least I have the convenience of not sitting in traffic for two hours trying to get home from work.
I have to be a little impressed with Handel. Back in ‘02, it would have been lovely to obtain a picture of Perdue with Clinton. Bill Byrne would have loved it even more. In any case, I recieved her mail piece showing Stephens meeting Clinton. We can look forward to a beautifully bruising runoff between the two, though I did hear someone say at the Marietta July 4th parade that Charlie Bailey was running ahead of Stephens in a poll.
On the Democratic side, things appear a little muddled right now, though no one seems to be going negative. Candidates to watch are Scott Holcombe, Shyam Reddy, and Gail Buckner. I see either of them making the runoff.
Anyone who lives in Cherokee County should be voting against Derek Good and Michael Byrd. These two peas are out to enrich ONLY themselves and couldn’t care less about the people they are supposed to be serving.

What’s the latest?
Is it Tom Brooks at the ledger news who got fired? Did the news say why?
And why hasnt the Cherokee Tribune covered the land deal?
Sounds like something the DA should be looking at.
As I recall, Bill, you called Byrd’s predecessor, Emily Lemke, a socialist for being less friendly to developers. I guess county officials need to strike a VERY fine balance to get your support!
This is the scoop on Mike Byrd: He and his planning commissioner appointee formed a real estate partnership whereby they will invest in land in Cherokee County.
Imagine, if you will, what happens when they buy some tracts of dirt-cheap land that mysteriously get re-zoned in the dark of night to be commercial land.
Byrd sees nothing wrong with what he’s going to do. I don’t even think he’s promised to recuse himself from any vote that might affect his land.
Derek Good is backed by real estate developers AND is a good buddy/ally of the Byrds. Anything Mike Byrd wants Good to vote on, he will, no questions asked.
Development is a good thing, Charley, but not when the deck of cards is marked in the land owner’s favor.
I see what you’re saying. I remember the revitalization of downtown Smyrna was financed through Security Exchange Bank, the same bank which lists Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon as a member of the Board of Directors. I think you would be hard pressed to find a development that DOESN’T have at least an element of personal profit for the local politicians supervising said development. The only question is one of degress. If Mike Byrd is worse than average, then Cherokee voters need to do something about that.
A few tid-bits. (I am not Bill Simon, by the way.)…
- Gina Carr, who lost to Charlice Byrd for State House two years ago, submitted her petition to the Secretary of State office. Gina was not going to run for office this year, but when the Republican challenger to Charlice dropped out, Gina decided to run. It was too late at that point to run as a Republican, so she will be an Independent on the ballot (if the Secretary of State validates the amount of signatures needed for her to be on the ballot in November).
- Word has it that the Charlice Byrd campaign has let Gina Carr know that they will get a copy of the petition (which is public record) and that they will be contacting persons who signed that list, challenging and threatening them. I’m not exactly sure what kind of threats they will be making, but that’s what I heard. I guess stuff like, “If you ever need help with something in Cherokee County, forget it — if you’ve signed that petition.” As far as challenging the signees, word is they will be calling these people and telling them they are supporting a bad person in Gina and encouraging them to let the Secretary of State know that they actually did not sign the list or “didn’t realize what they were doing.” My guess is that the people who signed the list are adults and were aware of what they were doing. I hope someone calls me with threats. I can’t wait to give them a piece of my mind. This is how the Byrds operate.
- Mike Byrd sent out a flyer saying that the land he bought is in the city of Ball Ground and not under his control. Maybe not, but he does have control over where roads go. Anyhow, the whole thing stinks. Buzz Ahrens is an attractive challenger, but probably has no chance.
- Derek Good sent out a flyer today saying that his opponent, David Waldrop, is a convicted felon. That is actually not the case. Waldrop pleaded no contest and was convicted of nothing. I wonder if Waldrop can sue Good for making such a claim? On another flyer from Good, there was a photo of a check that Waldrop had bounced. How would someone get a copy of someone else’s bounced check? I believe it was for county taxes. Would this make the check public record?
Anyhow, these guys in the Cherokee mafia do not mess around. They are ruthless. I hope people can spread the word on the good candidates.
One more rumor — and this is just a rumor. Karen “Karen Cares” Mauhurin, Cherokee County commissioner, has turned out to be a huge disappointment. She is just another yes person to Mike Byrd. Her campaign platform was a total lie. Anyhow, the rumor is that she likes to hit the bottle and was photographed recently at a bar exposing her breasts. I have that from a very good source, but it still just a rumor.
I believe Karen Mahurin is now separated or divorced from Eddie.
Another recently elected person in Cherokee who is now separated is Patty Baker, Clerk of Superior Court. Patty defeated a much more qualified person for the job in Wes Frye. But Patty was in with Linda Parker, Charlice Byrd, Chip Rogers and the rest of the Cherokee mafia.
Funny thing about Patty Baker. She had signs saying “Towne Lake’s Own” on her political signs the day of the election two years ago. But as soon as she won, she split from Towne Lake! She lives around Canton now, I think.
And whatever happened to John Wallace, one of the real thugs with the Cherokee mafia?
I have learned also that he has distanced himself from a lot of the Cherokee mafia.
But I’m still not convinced he is a good guy because of the sign thing. Chip says he authorized Craig Dowdy’s signs to be torn down because many of his own were disappearing. That makes no sense. Anybody who lives in Rogers’ senate district knows very well that, two years ago, you could hardly travel 100 yards without seeing a Chip Rogers sign. Many times you’d see five of them, Burma Shave style. Often you’d see a big one and a small one. They were everywhere. None of Chip Rogers’ signs were disappearing. I believe that is a total lie.
I helped out with some campaigns (not Dowdy’s) and made my rounds to check on my signs. I rarely saw a Dowdy sign standing. If you did, you knew it would not be long before it was gone. I saw Dowdy repairing one of his signs in Towne Lake once and stopped and offered some of my clear tape. The next day, that sign had LITERALLY been cut into at least twenty pieces. It was like they were saying, “Try to tape THAT sign back together.”
This sign destruction went on throughout the campaign. Rogers is the most sign-aware candidate I’ve ever known of in my short time following politics closely. So he KNEW about the destruction. He could have stopped the destruction, but he DID NOT.
Did he ever apologize to Dowdy? I do know he was most arrogant at the court hearing regarding the signs, saying that Dowdy was just displaying sour grapes over losing by 85% to 15%. No, he was upset that all of his signs were torn down over a one-month period!
I heard also that this sign destruction occured during his campaign two years earlier for State House versus Dawn Marr. I wasn’t involved in a campaign at that time and didn’t notice one way or the other, so I can’t confirm this.
But I can confirm with 100% certainty what happened during the race against Dowdy: Rogers’ campaign tore down the signs of Dowdy over and over again over a month’s time; Rogers knew what was going on; none of Rogers’ signs were “disappearing”; Rogers could have stopped the destruction but did not do it; Rogers never apologized to Dowdy for a thing (as far as I know).
P.S.: Rogers’ sign erectors broke every rule in the book for putting up signs: They put them on private property without getting permission; they put them in front of properties for sale (including houses); they put the signs in right-of-ways.
So, while Rogers may be trying to distance himself (on the surface) from the mafia, I don’t believe it for a second. What is unfortunate is that Rogers is a very attractive politician who could win elections without resorting to these tactics. And he is a very effective legislator as it is! But in his heart he is a mafia guy in my opinion. Rogers is only setting himself up for a run for governor in the future, which everyone in Cherokee predicts. Heaven help Georgia.
House District 22 as a Dem “Southern Democrat” trying to get a 2 party system in the county. I did let my dad down for the SOS race but have helped indirectly.
But lets get one thing straight I am still an American and for the troops and do not agree with any attack ads the National Dem Party does and has done in the past couple weeks.
We live in Towne Lake and got a letter from the Towne Lake Residential Owners Association today endorsing Mike Byrd and Derek Good.
I thought it was against the law for a non-profit organization to endorse a political candidate. Is this correct? At the bottom of the letter it stated that the mailing was paid for with ROA funds.
Donnie Henriques, Woodstock mayor and a snake in the grass, was one of the officers of the TL ROA whose name appeared at the bottom of the letter. It appears that all of the ROA officers’ names were at the bottom of the letter.
Maybe some technicality allowed them to pull this off without getting in trouble. Appreciate any comments on this.
I enjoyed giving the Mayor one of my flags for the 4th and one of the local magazines was there to take the pic. I could tell he did not want it but he had to take it. Bill from Towne Lake any advice from a Republican from Cobb who moved to Cherokee and now runs as a Southern Dem. By the way my dad is Charlie Bailey.
Kevin, if you’re asking me for advice, I’d say to change parties. Democrat is a dirty word in Cherokee. I’m amazed that there is even a Democrat party organization in Cherokee. I think their website is cherokeedems.com
I don’t think you could win an election as a Dem in Cherokee. Maybe a statewide election, but not a local one.
Bill Simon, good idea. I will ask them on Monday. Everytime I contact them I get the run-around, so I don’t expect much help.
Bill,
Uh, as I understand it, Kevin used to be a Republican. Do you think that the people of Cherokee county shouldn’t have a choice? Right now it’s the mafia running the county. The mafia in Cherokee will never be defeated if someone doesn’t stand up to them.
Yes you are correct, I am trying to give the people of Cherokee a second chance to vote. I had my run in with the Party here when my Dad ran for SOS and got made it to the General. The party up here said if we did not do what they asked he would not win. They told another candidate the same thing she won. They would not have let me run in there party for the House Race and I did not see much of a rush to qualify in April to run against the guys and gals here.
I know some of the Board members maybe good guys, Johnston from what I hear is one. I am trying to help the people in the county. I made the plunge and the choice to change parties and they know my points and views which some lean towards the Republican side.
Bill Simon knows I did not bow to the Cobb Gop and it showed my poor Dad gets no love even in his own party. I am a Southern Dem, I guess you could say now who even has a NRA card. I even did the bike race against the Republicans at Dixie and won and broke my hand. I take the job serious and with due respect I know there will be a battle in the next couple of months. I will put my web page up next week, had to protect my platform. If you know my dad and the fire that runs in our belly you would understand my view. My dad even took a shot in the gut standing up for Bill Simon at a the County Convention and paid the price for it being shut out of the Player’s Club of the Republican party.
Yes, I was a County, District and State Delegate. I was one for a couple of years for Cobb County.
Kevin,
Your platform is a good one. These are the issues that most people (or at least the ones I talk to) are interested in. Anyhow, it looks like you will be running against Sean Jerguson for the house. What do you think about that?
Caroline,
I spoke to the SOS office and its up in the air they have to count some overseas ballots. I spoke with Sean before the generaland today and I think he will be fair and not attack. Sean will run on the issues and not turn this into an ugly fight. Mary would put up a good fight. It was hard to contact Mary so I can not say to much regarding her style and issues. The race I am sure either way will be a horse race and a battle to the end. I know there is a need for mailers to get the word out maybe I can find some walkers to help spread the word. The sad thing is my mind is on Annies parents dog it was ran over and had to be put to sleep. The corgi in my picture was the dogs sister “same breeder”. I hope to make more sense next time.
Caroline,
I was wondering what the word is on the street regarding the run off results. Have you spoken to your friends or heard thru the grapevine who the republicans really wanted to win.
Kevin,
Most of the Republicans that I know are either demoralized, indifferent or “bushbots”. They really don’t seem to care who won. I would imagine that it’s six one way, half a dozen the other. Sorry to say but I think that Mary’s race was a factor in her losing the primary but apparently a lot of other people don’t like Sean for whatever reason.
The thing you probably have going for you is that, according to people like Charlie Cook and Larry Sabato, having a D by your name is a positive this year. Have you noticed how the Republicans are running away from W? No one apparently wants him to campaign for them and state parties are taking his picture completely off their website. Even Tom Price doesn’t have Republican on his signs-or at least the ones that I have seen.
Caroline,
I heard the same as you regarding Mary, and yes it is sad. I will start hitting the trail this weekend or do you think it is to soon with the run off fatigue. What do you know about the Back Alley Bash.
Caroline,
Mary and Sean with his campaign worker were in court Friday regarding a matter which happened during the run-off. There was guy passing out some information regarding Mary doing some work for Bill Campbell and she followed the guys and walked up to one on started calling some names according to the charges. Mary tried taking the information being passed out and tried to block him from approaching cars. The sheriff’s stopped by did not arrest her but Sean’s campaign worker pressed the 3 charges. They were in court all day Friday with no verdict or announcing of the issues going farther. There was one charge thrown out but the other two stuck. The paper on Saturday said mediation was tried but did not produce any results. Sean was no way involved in the altercation which took place only the campaign worker.
It intriques me how you “weren’t involved” in either campaign yet you seem to know all of the “facts” surrounding both Chip and Craig’s campaigns.
I was Chip’s campaign manager, yes…the kid who was charged with theft, destruction, and more. You don’t know the half of the story, and you claim that you don’t know it, yet you come on this board and slander Sen. Rogers. Our signs were disappearing, and on several occassions cut to pieces. In the days leading up to the primary this was happening at an alarming rate. In frustration, Chip made a comment to me which I, because of MY immaturity repeated to those around me at the time. Within minutes….literally minutes both Chip and his wife Amy were at the campaign HQ rebutting what I said. Unfortunately all of our employees weren’t there, and again, because of MY immaturity I didn’t think to call those who had already left. With 40 employees going at the speed of light the day before the primary…I’ll be honest, I was overwhelmed, but it was my responsibility. This issue has long been resolved by the parties involved.
I must admit, I found your post quite confusing, as you first stated you weren’t involved in either campaign, yet you go on to say you know with “100% certainty” exactly what happened. Your disdain for Rogers confirms the fact that you’ve probably never discussed it with him, so an accurate appraisal of the situation on your end is highly unlikely.
You also claim that our campaign “broke every rule in the book” by putting signs on private property, and even in front of houses for sale. This is simply untrue. As is the Marr statement made earlier in your post, but it seems obvious to me, and I’m sure the other readers, that you have an axe to grind with the Metro area’s most popular citizen-legislator, regardless of whether or not you have to go back 4 years (and several untruths) to do it.
Respectfully,
DW

Breasts being exposed in Cherokee County?!?!
GASPPPPPP! WHERE? What’s the best place to witness this activity
July 11th, 2006 at 8:00 pm
Is Karen a babe?
July 12th, 2006 at 12:38 pm
July 12th, 2006 at 3:20 pm
I have to correct something here…Chip Rogers is not, as I have discovered, a member of the Cherokee “Mafia” per se.
I’ve met him, talked with him, and now understand a lot about them that I didn’t know before.
He may be supported by the Cherokee County Mafia, but that does not make him one of them.
July 12th, 2006 at 5:27 pm

Bill Simon,
Did you hear what I am doing in the famous Cherokee county. I can say one thing at least my signs are up and been up for the last month.
July 13th, 2006 at 9:56 pm
What are you running for up there, Kevin?
July 14th, 2006 at 4:56 am
House District 22 as a Dem “Southern Democrat” trying to get a 2 party system in the county. I did let my dad down for the SOS race but have helped indirectly.
July 14th, 2006 at 4:57 am
But lets get one thing straight I am still an American and for the troops and do not agree with any attack ads the National Dem Party does and has done in the past couple weeks.
July 14th, 2006 at 6:30 am
Which ads are you talking about?
July 14th, 2006 at 4:02 pm
July 14th, 2006 at 4:04 pm
If they are classified as a 501(c)(3) at teh federal level, then yes, it is illegal and against IRS rules that they endorse.
But, a common non-profit may be registered in the state as a non-profict and not be a 501(c)(3).

Not sure if this link will work or not. From GA secretary of state website.
July 14th, 2006 at 8:04 pm
How could one find out if they are registered with the IRS as 501(c)(3)?
July 14th, 2006 at 8:32 pm
Ask them?
July 14th, 2006 at 9:05 pm
I enjoyed giving the Mayor one of my flags for the 4th and one of the local magazines was there to take the pic. I could tell he did not want it but he had to take it. Bill from Towne Lake any advice from a Republican from Cobb who moved to Cherokee and now runs as a Southern Dem. By the way my dad is Charlie Bailey.
July 15th, 2006 at 10:39 am
Kevin, if you’re asking me for advice, I’d say to change parties. Democrat is a dirty word in Cherokee. I’m amazed that there is even a Democrat party organization in Cherokee. I think their website is cherokeedems.com
I don’t think you could win an election as a Dem in Cherokee. Maybe a statewide election, but not a local one.
Bill Simon, good idea. I will ask them on Monday. Everytime I contact them I get the run-around, so I don’t expect much help.
July 15th, 2006 at 12:40 pm
Bill,
Uh, as I understand it, Kevin used to be a Republican. Do you think that the people of Cherokee county shouldn’t have a choice? Right now it’s the mafia running the county. The mafia in Cherokee will never be defeated if someone doesn’t stand up to them.
July 15th, 2006 at 5:05 pm
Caroline,
Yes you are correct, I am trying to give the people of Cherokee a second chance to vote.

I made some typos in my last comment sorry storm was coming and wanted to post the comment.
July 16th, 2006 at 3:31 pm
I’m all for Kevin winning. In fact, I’ll vote for him. All I’m saying is that it’s going to be tough for him to win in Cherokee. Good luck to Kevin.

Thanks for your support.

Bill, Okay, I’m sorry I misread your statement.

Caroline, I would like for you to look at my webpage and add some input.

I am the Dem running for State House Rep 22.
Thanks,

August 8th, 2006 at 9:34 pm
Kevin,
Your platform is a good one. These are the issues that most people (or at least the ones I talk to) are interested in. Anyhow, it looks like you will be running against Sean Jerguson for the house. What do you think about that?
August 8th, 2006 at 9:45 pm
Caroline,
I spoke to the SOS office and its up in the air they have to count some overseas ballots.
August 10th, 2006 at 6:32 pm
Caroline,
I was wondering what the word is on the street regarding the run off results. Have you spoken to your friends or heard thru the grapevine who the republicans really wanted to win.
Kevin
August 10th, 2006 at 7:26 pm
Kevin,
Most of the Republicans that I know are either demoralized, indifferent or “bushbots”.
August 10th, 2006 at 7:45 pm
Caroline,
I heard the same as you regarding Mary, and yes it is sad. I will start hitting the trail this weekend or do you think it is to soon with the run off fatigue. What do you know about the Back Alley Bash.
Kevin
August 19th, 2006 at 4:21 pm
Bill,
I was wondering what is the Mary camp saying regarding Sean’s campaign worker.
Kevin M. Bailey
August 19th, 2006 at 4:22 pm
Caroline,
What do you think of the Mary and Sean issue with the filing of charges.
Kevin M. Bailey
August 19th, 2006 at 7:23 pm
Kevin,
I haven’t heard about that one. You’ll have to tell me what’s happening there.
August 20th, 2006 at 7:56 am
Caroline,
Mary and Sean with his campaign worker were in court Friday regarding a matter which happened during the run-off.

Bill(not Simon),
It intriques me how you “weren’t involved” in either campaign yet you seem to know all of the “facts” surrounding both Chip and Craig’s campaigns.
Respectfully,
DW
