Cobb County Boxing Match - Round 492

Saturday, March 01, 2003

Well, for those of you who are really big fans of the political soap-opera known as "The Young, The Old, and The Really Stupid People in The Cobb GOP," today's episode won't disappoint you.

Today's show opened-up with a reading of the state GOP's resolution that granted the misfits of the Cobb GOP a way out of their violation of state party rules. The resolution passed by a wide margin and that was that. Of course, no one broached the subject of why the hell the meeting was called or why we had a resolution to vote on (Hint: Because the current management team of the Cobb GOP are a bunch of rule-breakers who got caught).

Anyway, the show proceeded with a presentation by Pete Mitchell. Pets's a longtime resident and participant in the Cobb GOP and he gave a little presentation on what people could expect from the convention scheduled next Saturday, March 8.

In his talk, he had apparently made a comment that the chairman of the convention was someone who had to be voted-on as convention chairman. We say "apparently" because we missed precisely what he said due to our attention being drawn somewhere else. But, whatever he said caused the Wickedest Witch of The West, Marilyn Gilhuly, to snatch the microphone from Pete's hand when he was done and loudly proclaim "No! I appoint the chairman of the convention and the convention accepts my choice!"

Whereupon Scott Chadwick protested and said that wasn't entirely accurate and tried to get a word in edgewise that it was really up to the convention to decide who was convention chair, not the current chairman. But, he didn't get that chance. Gilhuly screamed at Chadwick that he was "out of order!" (yeah, as if Gilhuly or her Gil-hooligans know what being IN order means).

Then, the meeting proceeded to the point where candidates running for office spoke about their candidacy. Everything was honkey-dory until Gilhuly told Scott Chadwick to get-up and make his speech. Chadwick, thinking that it might be fairer if he and Hobbs flipped for it, took out a coin and asked Hobbs to call heads or tails. Again, this set Gilhuly off like a bottle rocket.

She screamed into the microphone that Chadwick has to go first because "C" is before "H" and that if he didn't go then, he wouldn't get to speak. So, Chadwick took the microphone whereupon he started talking about his candidacy and how he wanted to unite the party. This didn't sit well with the Hobbs Camp and they proceeded to boo and hiss and make noises while Chadwick was speaking, in much the same manner as the Democrats did against the Republicans who showed-up for Paul Wellstone's funeral last October. Very rude, very noisy and very low-class.

Contrast that with what happened when Hobbs got-up to speak, no one said a word. No one hissed. No one booed. The Chadwick Camp displayed respect, the Hobbs Camp didn't. Simple as that.

Now, after the speeches and the adjournment, another little verbal altercation ensued. This time, between Bill Simon and the Brickers, Sallye and Herb. See, it was the Bricker table who was making the most noise during Chadwick's speech, and Simon took it upon himself to personally thank Sallye for her rudeness. This set Herb off to start calling Simon an "idiot" and for Sallye to defend her actions as saying "what Scott was talking about was wrong and I disagreed with it."

Simon retorted against Herb Bricker using rather peppery language. Herb Bricker acted all defensive and Simon turned around and walked away. A few minutes later, Sallye Bricker apologized to Simon and Simon apologized back. Herb Bricker, still fuming over Simon's use of peppery language in front of his wife demanded that Simon never use language like that again in front of his wife. Simon later remarked to a Vine reporter that had Sallye Bricker actually acted like a lady and not booed and hissed in a rude manner during Scott Chadwick's speech in the first place, no such offensive exchange of heated words would have ever occured between him and the Brickers.

In contrast, Simon had very pleasant conversations with women like Doris Fowler, Nan Ploener, Taffy Rice, Debbie Ellis and Carolyn Garcia on matters about the party after the meeting. So, since he can talk to these women without acting mean and nasty, perhaps it means he's not as mean and nasty a guy as people try to make him out to be. Perhaps he's only mean and nasty against people who are mean and nasty to start with and deserve instantaneous retribution.
