At his 71st birthday, Cheeta, the movie chimp who acted in 12 different Tarzan pictures announced his candidacy for Governor of California as a Democrat.

He also announced that his new name was Cheeta Uumgawa Mohammed Gonzalez. "I want to have as many Californians identify with me in my campaign."

Fellow actors George Clooney, Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon, Tim Burton (who may be a distant relative) and Barbra Streisand have agreed to appear in his first fundraiser next week.

"I am tired of those Republicans monkeying around with tax cuts and the like." he said. "I am as big a swinger as former President Clinton. He likes me and even tried to hit on one of my
granddaughters the last time he was out here."
