Cain against so-called "morning-after" pillForest Park, Ga., Dec. 17, 2003 - Herman Cain, conservative Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, issued the following statement in response to recent recommendations of an FDA advisory panel concerning the so called “morning-after” abortion pill:
“My pro-life views are deeply rooted in the belief that no Nation can succeed unless it values all human life - from the unborn to the elderly. It appears that just as we are advancing the cause of life with a ban on the infanticide known as partial birth abortion, the pro-abortion crowd is striking back with such initiatives as the broader distribution of abortion pills.
“We should not be surprised by increased violence among our children when our society continues to cheapen the value of our most vulnerable citizens - the unborn. Selling abortion pills with a prescription is bad enough but selling them without a prescription would be even worse as it would take parents completely out of the equation. Having this abortion pill so widely available encourages promiscuity, irresponsibility and unprotected sex. More than the added concern of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, we should not use a pill to send the message that sex, protected or not, will not have consequences!
“These so-called "morning-after" pills are misleading! Life begins at conception, at fertilization, not when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterus lining. This pill attempts to stop the new life from attaching itself to receive nourishment from the mother, so it can grow. Let there be no mistake, the use of this pill is abortion! I am thankful that we have a pro-life president and I ask President Bush to ensure that the FDA does not follow the reckless and dangerous recommendations of this advisory panel.
“Our children and our grandchildren need to hear the message that there are still some things in this world that are sacred, including life. The easy access to the abortion pill will send the message that people can engage in irresponsible behavior, just because there is a pill to kill the consequences.”
Herman Cain, a conservative Republican from McDonough, Ga., is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Zell Miller (D-GA).
