- U.S. Senate Candidate blasts Democrat leaders for use of scare tactics

FOREST PARK - Herman Cain, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, blasted Senate Democrats for their continued use of rhetoric and scare tactic when addressing the needs of America’s seniors.

“The Democrat leaders in the United States Senate don’t have a plan or even a clue on how to fix Social Security,” said Cain. “Instead of addressing the facts, Senators Daschle, Kerry and Edwards resort to the same empty rhetoric and scare tactics they have been using for the past few decades or promise more from a system that is going bankrupt.”

Cain continued, “Alan Greenspan was right, under the current system we only have two options: cut benefits or extend the retirement age. I don’t like any of these options. This is why I am proposing that we restructure Social Security so that we can make it work.”

Yesterday at a House Budget Committee hearing, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan warned that growing federal budget deficits and the retirement of Baby Boomers will require future cuts in Social Security to avoid tax increases that would damage the economy.

“Some Democrats see this as an opportunity to try and roll back the tax cuts,” said Cain. “They are working on the wrong problem. The tax cuts did not cause this problem. Tax cuts need to remain permanent so that our economy can continue to grow.”

Cain concluded, “In order to fix Social Security, we must restructure it so that we continue to provide for our Nation’s seniors that are approaching retirement age, but allow for younger taxpayers to invest a portion of their Social Security taxes in private accounts.”

Herman Cain, a conservative Republican from McDonough, Ga., is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Zell Miller (D-GA). A successful businessman and author of three books, Cain has served as Chairman and CEO of Godfathers Pizza as well as head of the National Restaurant Association. Married for 35 years, Cain has two children and one grandchild. He is also an associate minister at Antioch Baptist Church North in Atlanta.
