I got the scary letter too, but with a wrinkle. I got my tag sticker, and a separate letter with the warning that I may not have insurance on my car.

This made no sense to me, so I called my insurance agent, and he verified that my policy is current, and then suggested that maybe the VIN was inconsistent between the insurance company database and the DMV database.

Sure enough, the DMV had transposed an "S" into a "5". I have to call and correct that today, though I am using my sticker anyway.

My agent said he had several calls about this same thing, and that the "5/S" confusion was the most frequent he had heard of recently. He also told me that the cops will no longer be looking at our insurance cards, but will look at the VIN and check their database for valid insurance. Big brother is watching!
