Re: Immigration Policy

Friday, August 01, 2003

Dear PV,

Thank you for publishing Ms. Donna Locke's article, "Immigration policy should be guided by logic and Reality."

Americans should also wonder why Mexico and many Mexican-American activists are actively pushing for the acceptance of Mexican ID cards in many states, and amnesty and benefits such as in-state tuition and driver's licenses for millions of illegal Mexican immigrants, and more guest worker programs.

In June 2002, a Zogby poll showed that 58 percent of Mexicans in Mexico believe the U.S. Southwest rightfully belongs to them and 57%of Mexicans do not believe that they need U.S. permission to enter this country.

Not surprisingly, in 1997, Ernesto Zedillo, then president of Mexico, said in Chicago that the "Mexican nation extends beyond its territories enclosed by its borders and that Mexican migrants are an important, a very important, part of it."

In 1995, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros told a Hispanic audience: "As goes the Latino population will go the state of California, and as goes the state of California will go the United States of America. My friends, the stakes are big. This is a fight worth making."

In the last decade, the Mexican population exploded all over the U.S. Although most Mexican migrants have no political agenda, is Mexico using immigration to control American policies and, eventually, control the entire U.S.? We should remember that children born in the U.S. even of illegal immigrants and guest workers are U.S. citizens and can vote when they turn 18.

Sincerely,
