The following is the text of the Governor's fitness challenge that was sent to all state offices today.
February 4, 2003
Dear Friends,
Over the past couple of months, I have often said that state government needs to go on a diet. I was referring to a fiscal diet that would promote a healthier budget. As a state, both our fiscal and physical health is important. I have made some recommendations for our fiscal health, and now I want to begin addressing our physical health.
I have set a goal to build a healthier Georgia. As in the budgetary process, this will not just require trimming excesses. It will require planning, a realignment of priorities, and a commitment to meeting our goals. Curbing our appetite for more is only part of the equation. We need to learn how to be more mindful about connecting our thoughts to our actions. I am deeply sensitive to the fact that we are all busy with the daily pressure of balancing our personal and professional lives.
The best way I know how to tackle such a worthy yet significant undertaking is to step up and out first. In short, I want to lead by example. I have wanted to make some healthy lifestyle changes for a while now. I can't think of a better way of doing it than to have some fun, gain the support of friends, and interject a little well-meaning competition. That is why I am issuing The Governor's Capitol Challenge.
The Governor's Capitol Challenge will be a program to promote starting and sustaining of healthy lifestyle habits. We have the volunteer help of professionals in several health-related fields. They have assured me that everyone who accepts the challenge will have fun, set personal goals, and begin an action plan. There is no requirement to join a health club, purchase fitness equipment, or participate in diets or exercise that cause you pain and suffering. You can participate individually or on a team.
The program will run for the next couple of months, but I need to receive your entry by 12:00 pm on Friday, February 7. Please send an email to
Get Fit With The Gov with your name, phone number, and category (e.g. department or agency name, Representative, Senator, press, etc.) Shortly after the Friday deadline, you will receive more details. The challenge will begin on Monday, February 10, 2003. Let's get busy spreading the word to our co-workers.
I am very excited about the benefits of the Governor's Capitol Challenge and look forward to the fun of participating in this rewarding event with all of you. Help me lead by following.
For a Healthier Georgia,
Sonny Perdue
