Mark Taylor: The BIGGEST Left-Winger In The Southeast

by Bill Simon

In today’s AJC, Mark Taylor got the endorsement from both Jay Bookman and Cynthia Tucker, the paper’s two most left-wing editorial board members ON THE PLANET.

That, combined with Taylor getting the endorsement from Cynthia McKinney last fall, nails Mark Taylor as being the BIGGEST (not in “Big-Guy” vernacular as being a physical size thing) Left-Winger in the Southeast.

If Mark Taylor wins the primary, Sonny Perdue is guaranteed to be re-elected with a sizable margin.

If Cathy Cox wins, Sonny Perdue will be in for a bigger fight than he had with Roy Barnes.

It will be a very interesting election night for the Dem side.

Well, from an Atlanta perspective, that’s probably true. Taylor, however, is a very tough campaigner if Sonny’s ad campaign so far is indicative of how he plans to run in the fall, then he will have a tough time whether Cox or Taylor is the nominee

  2. Nick C. Says:

The “Big Guy” will most likely win the Democratic primary. This will bode well for Sonny P. I think Cathy would give the Gov. a run for his money.

  3. Buzz Brockway Says:

I think Cathy Cox is a more “attractive” candidate in that she’d have a better chance and peeling away women from Perdue. Taylor will have a hard time doing that. However, Taylor is a brawler and he’ll take the fight to Perdue.

I think the momentum is with Taylor and he wins the Dem. nomination.

Taylor is going to win the nomination and the fight against Perdue is going to be tough. This primary has been nothing compared to what he will face come next wednesday, but I see him doing better than Cathy could ever even dream of.

Bill, have you seen the way she has run her race? It is pathetic. She cannot keep her story straight (pun intended) from day to day. Sonny and the republican party would have had a field day with her. They would dreg up so much bullshit on her running of the SOS office that Randy Evans would be beaming for years. How many convicted felons, child molesters, dirty car salesman, etc would they find in all the folk she gave a license to?

Buzz is right, and Taylor will fight Perdue tooth and nail, give Sonny a few black eyes, but will most likely lose.

Cathy on the other hand would have been sent home early in October and be seen as just going through the motions until november. She was supposed to bring the republican women into her fold during the primary but that sure as hell has not happened.

Oh, and on a side note, Cathy’s birthday is July 18th. I am sure her birthday is going to suck.

  5. Charley Levinson Says:

The clear superiority of the Taylor campaign thus far leads me to believe that the Lieutenant Governor, not Secretary Cox, is the stronger candidate against Perdue. That was, in large part, why he garnered the support of both Mr. Bookman and Ms. Tucker.

In a Taylor/Perdue matchup, gay marriage is not an issue; Mark’s support for the ban has been consistent and documented. Abortion can be brought up – but only at the peril of the incumbent. I believe a slim majority of voters are where Taylor is – safe, legal, rare, with common-sense restrictions. That leaves massive job losses, $1 billion in education cuts, cuts to the PeachCare program, and continuing gridlock on Atlanta-area roads as the record which Perdue must defend.

Without traditional GOP distractions, with a sorry record of accomplishment, and with the X-factor that are the flaggers, who got himself into a world of political trouble? Sonny did.

  6. RL Says:

I agree… Cathy Cox has a much better chance of giving Perdue a run for his money.

Taylor will be lucky to top Denise Majette’s 40% against Johnny.

  7. Bill Simon Says:

    Stephanie,

I cannot believe the downward spiral of the Cox campaign. I can only chalk it up to bad choices in, first, campaign managment, and then bad media consultants.

Do you folks on the Dem side employ “general consultants” in races?

  8. Bill Simon Says:

    Charley & Stephanie,

Your best hope is to have Ralph on the ticket. Not only with all the other baggage he has, but the more recent revelation that he was firmly entertaining the idea of a “Black Elders Insurance Plan” with Jack Abramoff.

  9. Nick C. Says:

Yes. Cathy has run a very disorganized campaign. She did have a decent shot at victory but she blew it. I always thought she had a good chance of winning with a “New South” democratic woman kind of campaign in the Metro and a home town appeal in south GA. I hope she pops back up in Gov. service some where. She was a good administrator for the SOS office. Maybe the Gov. can appoint her to a postion. That we get the benefit of her service w/out the higher office ambition.

  10. stephaniemills Says:

    Bill,

All I have to say is No Shit! Reed would have made the a Democratic gubernatorial victory a lot more plausible.

Gosh I hate casey cagle right now.

  11. caroline Says:

I don’t understand the professed love of Sonny by suburban women. I know plenty who voted for him in 2002 but won’t vote for him this year. Is there some evidence to back that up?

  12. Charley Levinson Says:

The Cathy Cox campaign hit the rocks when Morton Brilliant was sacked. He took the fall when the DUI conviction of Mark Taylor’s son Christian was placed on Taylor’s Wikipedia biography. Also, give some credit to the Taylor campaign. They knew they were running behind as the year started, but they stuck with their plan, didn’t lose their head, and now….we’ll see this Tuesday.

  13. Kimberly Smith Says:

I can’t believe people are still saying that Cox would give Perdue a run for his money. Is anyone else watching the same race I am? Cox is a weak candidate. She talks a lot but has no actual agendas set. Everything she has done has blown up in her face. She would be an easy target for Republicans.

  14. Chris Trudeau Says:

It seems to me that the winner of the Primary is going to have to drum up support from the other to win in November, which should be an interesting conversation!

All Sonny will have to do for smear campaigns is replay his TIVO’d newscasts over the last month…and he’ll have plenty of material on how to run dirty campaigns against either of these candidates.

  15. caroline Says:

    Chris,
I think it will be very interesting. It will be very negative. Can you imagine Taylor using a picture of Bush holding hands with Bandar with a voiceover of Bush’s endorsement of Sonny from ’02?

Today's Deep Thought

One afternoon, when I was about ten, I decided to walk over to the 'wrong side of the tracks.' At first I was a little scared. But then I noticed that the yards were nice, and so were the houses. In fact, most of the houses were better than those on our side of the tracks. A lot better.
