Legislative Open Thread

by Bill Simon

What are your thoughts on this year’s session that is just wrapping up? Observations of the Good, The Bad, The Ugly, and The Stupid are all welcome…

Glad you asked. This is the first year that I have attempted to keep an eye on the legislature while they are still in session. My conclusions are:
    1. When it comes to immigration, they are trying to appear like they are doing something, yet they are doing nothing.
    2. When it comes to correcting business excesses, such as 300% interest in car title pawn lending, the Republican leadership simply cannot do what is right. (It may have something to do with $300K+ in contributions by pawn lenders.)
    3. When it comes to correcting past wrongs such as the Tort Reform farce of 2005, they prefer to let one of their number, Preston Smith, unilaterally decide not to do anything.
    4. When it comes to allowing patients an opportunity to participate (or at least be informed) in the process of investigating complaints filed with the Board of Medical Examiners, they have no sense of fairness.
    5. When it comes to allowing individuals the right to place a credit freeze on transactions with the credit reporting agencies to prevent identity theft, it is much more important to protect the pocketbook of the credit agencies, than the consumer.
    6. When it comes to having lobbyist throw engagement parties for legislators, they are arrogant and without shame.
    7. As Bill Shipp, said, where is Tom Murphy? Theese guys are nuts.

  2. Bill Simon Says:

    Greedy nuts, that’s for sure.

  3. Kevin Bailey Says:

Wilson, I agree the last two years were the worst I have seen. I also was wondering where is Tom Murphy but thats a story for another day. The title loans what a joke that was the people trying to get out of debt lost more money trying to save more. There are to many people switching messing up the bills and the votes.

    Kevin

  4. john t harris Says:

I’ll take bidness men over the Georgia Bar any day.

  5. Wilson Smith Says:

My fear is that if these power mongers do not learn a lesson from the electorate this November, they may think themselves even more invincible. Until people realize that the dangers of keeping this Republican majority in power far outweigh just about any alternative (like voting for a..a uh..uh an..a Democrat), chances are we will continue to re-elect them, again and again. They know that and they are snickering at the complainers. Qualification for office just closed and I am waiting to find out how many of them even have opposition in the fall.

  6. Kevin Bailey Says:

Wilson, I was thinking of running but I thought qualifiaction was the last week of this month. I will look at the SOS and make sure would you run.

    Kevin

  7. Bill Simon Says:

    Wilson,

Qualifying isn’t until near the end of April.

Today's Deep Thought

One afternoon, when I was about ten, I decided to walk over to the 'wrong side of the tracks.' At first I was a little scared. But then I noticed that the yards were nice, and so were the houses. In fact, most of the houses were better than those on our side of the tracks. A lot better.
