State Rep. Matt Dollar…

politicalvine, April 3rd, 2006

Rumors have it that State Representative Matt Dollar (R-Cobb County) has been living outside of his district for at least 2 years and is shacked-up with one of his girlfriends in her Buckhead apartment. Rumors around the Capitol is that it is well-known amongst his fellow legislators who consider it one of the wink-wink-nod-nod perks of being in the majority.

Cagle Smashes The Sound Barrier in Fundraising

Bill Simon, April 3rd, 2006

The Casey Cagle campaign for Lt. Governor raised over $100,000 in the 24 hours following the close of business in the 2006 Georgia General Assembly. Here’s their press release:

Atlanta, GA – The Casey Cagle for Lt. Governor campaign announced today that it raised over $100,000 on Friday, March 31st despite having only a single day to raise funds. The $100,000 Cagle raised came solely in response to phone calls and emails during the day on Friday.

Friday was the last day of the upcoming reporting period, and the only day in that period where Cagle was allowed to raise money following the conclusion of the legislative session. By contrast, Cagle’s opponent – Ralph Reed — is a lobbyist who is not elected to any office and has therefore been allowed to raise funds without any legal restrictions for the entire year.

Increasing Border Patrol is Pointless

Bill Simon, April 3rd, 2006

The following is an e-mailed newsletter I get from a Republican in Oklahoma. His slogan, “An Eleventh Commandment Free Zone”, was inspired by our 2001 Georgia GOP state chairman’s race. 🙂

Craig Dawkins has been putting out Modern Patriot Chronicles for about 5 years. He’s not real regular (like I am…ha!), but I admire Craig for his very insightful viewpoint on things and this article hits the nail on the head:

Increasing Border Patrol is Pointless

Copyright@2006, All Rights Reserved

I could pretty much stop with the headline. But then some of you might get the wrong idea. Illegal immigration cannot be stopped. Not by the U.S. government patrolling our borders. Not by the giant money sucking behemoth that is our federal government. The INS lacks resources, manpower, infrastructure and focus. But even if it got all four of these in line, it would not be able to stop illegal aliens from crossing the Rio Grande. Our government lacks any kind of political will to stop it.

Don’t Let Our Law-Makers Get Ahold Of This Info!

politicalvine, March 29th, 2006

A recent Cincinnati Enquirer headline read, “Smell of baked bread may be health hazard.” The article went on to describe the dangers of the smell of baking bread.

The main danger, apparently, is that the organic components of this aroma may break down ozone. This is horrifying. When are we going to do something about bread-induced global warming? Sure, we attack tobacco companies, but when is the government going to go after Big Bread?

Well, some research has been performed and what’s been discovered should make anyone think twice….

New Immigration Study: Illegals DO Take Jobs From Americans

Bill Simon, March 29th, 2006

A very recent study by the Center for Immigration Studies has the following conclusions with regard to “native workers” (i.e., American-born) and illegal immigrants:

* Looking first at all workers shows that between March 2000 and March 2005 only 9 percent of the net increase in jobs for adults (18 to 64) went to natives. This is striking because natives accounted for 61 percent of the net increase in the overall size of the 18 to 64 year old population.

* As for the less-educated, between March of 2000 and 2005 the number of adult immigrants (legal and illegal) with only a high school degree or less in the labor force increased by 1.6 million.

* At the same time, unemployment among less-educated adult natives increased by nearly one million, and the number of natives who left the labor force altogether increased by 1.5 million. Persons not in the labor force are neither working nor looking for work.

* Some of the occupations most impacted by immigration include maids, construction laborers, dishwashers, janitors, painters, cabbies, grounds keepers, and meat/poultry workers. The overwhelming majority of workers in these occupations are native-born.

Speaking as a lay person, I believe the use of the unemployment figure is a statistic that, by itself, really means nothing and should stop being bandied about as a reason to not focus on illegals (as our ignorant members of Congress keep doing).

I invite you to read more about the study by clicking the above link. Comment all you wish on what you think the results of this study means.

White House Chief of Staff Andy Card to Resign

politicalvine, March 28th, 2006

Rumors have it that White House Chief of Staff Andy Card has told President Bush that he wishes to resign. Card will be replaced by budget director Josh Bolten on April 14.

In a news story covering this, Bush is quoted as saying last week that “I’ve got a staff of people that have, first of all, placed their country above their self-interests…These are good, hard-working, decent people. And we’ve dealt with a lot. We’ve dealt with a lot. We’ve dealt with war. We’ve dealt with recession. We’ve dealt with scandal. We’ve dealt with Katrina.”

HB 1325: The Biggest Screwing of Georgia Gas Users Since The 1997 “De-Regulation Bill”

Bill Simon, March 26th, 2006

Senate Majority Leader Tommie Williams (R) is quoted in Saturday’s AJC as stating “[HB 1325 is] not a bad bill…It just hasn’t been explained.”

Wrong, Senator Williams. Not only is HB 1325 a bad bill, but, with nearly the entire Republican caucus of the House voting in favor of it, it becomes a VERY bad bill. Allow me to explain why and we’ll see if (at the conclusion) you readers of this agree with Senator Williams or with me.

As a minor aside, I’m not your normal political hack. I don’t have a poly-sci degree. Or, a law degree. Or, any liberal arts degree.

A Message To Ric Mayfield from Tucker Cagle: “Who’s Your Daddy Now?”

Bill Simon, March 23rd, 2006

Okay…now the tit-for-tat letter battle this week between the Casey Cagle and Ralph Reed campaigns has gotten EXTREMELY interesting.

To recap, first there was a letter authored by Casey Cagle printed last week in the Savannah Morning News.

Then the Reed campaign fired-back with a letter of their own last Monday.

The Definition of Something’s Fishy: Rep. Burkhalter, Rep. Lewis, and AGL…

Bill Simon, March 16th, 2006

Why exactly are two Republican State Reps. so in favor of requiring the citizens of Georgia to finance the construction of a pipeline to transport Liquified Natural Gas (“LNG”) on behalf of a PUBLICLY-OWNED
utility like Atlanta Gas Light?

Mark Burkhalter and Jeff Lewis are the two reps who carried this legislation and supported it through its passage in the House. I have several questions:

1) What exactly have they been promised from AGL and their lobbyists? I know Burkhalter is involved in real estate development and managment, and I looked-up Lewis’ background as well and, sure ’nuff, it turns out he’s also involved in the real estate game.

Not that there’s anything wrong with the real estate game per se, but, when it comes to a utility getting two supposed Republicans to think it’s a great idea to saddle the people of Georgia with paying for a pipeline that may or may not be needed 8 years into the future, something STINKS to high heaven. It cannot just be campaign donations…I seriously suspect there’s some other type of quid pro quo of a highly valued nature in the works between AGL and Messrs. Burkhalter and Lewis.

2) What the heck is wrong with the rest of the House that they are so easily duped into voting FOR this bill? Have they all turned into “neocons?” For those not too familiar with the word, a “neocon” is someone who represents themselves to the voter as a conservative but acts like a big-government Socialist in matters dealing with fiscal responsibilities. Burkhalter and Lewis are apparently the new leaders of the neocon movement in our state house.

I certainly hope that the State Senate comes to their senses and kills this bill in Rules or defeats it on the floor. This is NOT legislation that should be passed by Republicans.

Today's Deep Thought

Even though I was their captive, the Indians allowed me quite a bit of freedom. I could walk about freely, make my own meals, and even hurl large rocks at their heads. It was only later that I discovered they were not Indians at all, but dirty clothes hampers.
